Is what comes out of my tap actually safe?
Is my tap water safe to drink?
In the US, water leaving a municipal treatment plant usually meets EPA MCLs (Maximum Contaminant Levels). What arrives at your kitchen tap can differ. Lead from service lines, PFAS at levels below the new 2024 rule, and monitoring gaps all live outside SDWIS compliance data.

How do I check my water quality without buying anything?
Two free sources: (1) enter your ZIP at /my-water/ - we pull live EPA SDWIS violation history for your utility, or (2) look up your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) - they are legally required to send you one and post it online.
Both are compliance data, not contaminant readings for your specific tap. For that you need a lab test.
How do I check if my water has lead?

Does boiling tap water remove contaminants?
No. Boiling kills bacteria and reduces some volatile compounds, but it concentrates dissolved contaminants like lead, arsenic, nitrate, PFAS, and heavy metals as water evaporates.
Boiling is a bacteria-only fix. For dissolved contaminants you need filtration - reverse osmosis is the most complete home method - or bottled water.
What is the difference between city water and well water?
City water is regulated under the EPA Safe Drinking Water Act - your utility must test and report. Private wells are not regulated by the EPA. The homeowner is responsible for testing.

What is PFAS and why does it matter?
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are the "forever chemicals" used in firefighting foam, nonstick coatings, and industrial coatings. They persist in the environment for decades and are linked to cancer, immune issues, and developmental effects.
The EPA only finalised the drinking-water MCL for six PFAS compounds in April 2024, so many utilities have not yet been cited for exceeding it. The dedicated SimpleLab PFAS Test at /lab-tests/#all-kits measures the six regulated compounds.
How often should I test my drinking water?
Private wells: annually at minimum. City water: every 2-3 years is a reasonable cadence, or after any of these triggers: home purchase, new plumbing work, boil-water advisory, utility violation notice, or a change in taste, smell, or color.

What is a reverse osmosis system?
A reverse osmosis (RO) system pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane that blocks dissolved contaminants at the molecular level. It is the most complete point-of-use filtration for a home kitchen - reduces lead, arsenic, nitrate, chromium-6, PFAS, TDS, and hundreds of other dissolved contaminants that carbon filters cannot touch.

How does reverse osmosis work?
Household pressure pushes water through a pre-filter stack (sediment + carbon), then across the RO membrane. Water molecules pass through; dissolved ions, heavy metals, and larger organic molecules are rejected and flushed to drain. A post-filter polishes taste.
Tankless designs (like the Waterdrop G3P800) skip the pressure tank and use an internal pump for continuous flow.
What does an RO system remove from water?
Depending on its exact certification and filter design, an RO system may reduce: lead, copper, arsenic, chromium-6, nitrate, fluoride, PFAS (6 EPA-regulated compounds), radium, TDS, chlorine and chloramine (via the carbon pre-filter), disinfection byproducts (THMs, HAAs), pesticide residues, and pharmaceutical trace compounds.

Does RO remove healthy minerals too?
Yes. RO membranes reject minerals along with contaminants - so you lose calcium, magnesium, and potassium too.
Two solutions: (1) buy an RO system with a built-in alkaline / remineralization stage (e.g. Frizzlife PD1000-TAM4, Amazon →), or (2) add an inline mineralizer to any existing RO (Frizzlife TAM3 at Amazon, universal quick-connect).
Most of your dietary minerals come from food, not water - but restored mineral water tastes better and raises pH to 7.5+.
What is alkaline water and remineralization?
Alkaline water has a pH above 7.5, typically achieved by adding minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium) back after RO.
Mineralizing options include PD1000-TAM4, PD800-TAM4 and PD600-TAM3. Compare flow, installation, replacement filters and exact-model certification.

Is RO water safe for babies and kids?

Do I need a plumber to install an RO system?

What space do I need under my sink?

What can a home water test kit detect?
A laboratory kit measures the actual concentration of specific contaminants, not just presence or absence.
Panels cover lead, copper, coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate, arsenic, mercury, chlorine, fluoride, hardness, pH, PFAS (dedicated panel), VOCs (Ultimate tier), radionuclides, and disinfection byproducts.

What is the best home water test kit?
Choose a laboratory panel by the concern: broad city-water screening, well-water parameters, lead and copper, or PFAS. Check the current analyte list, laboratory accreditation, turnaround and sample instructions before ordering.

Do I need a lab test if I have an RO system?
Yes, once - to verify your specific system is actually reducing what it claims. Run one blind before/after test in the first month: send one sample from your regular cold tap and one from the RO faucet, brand labels stripped. The lab report will show the before/after delta per contaminant.
A before-and-after laboratory test can verify performance at your tap. Retest when water conditions change, after major plumbing work or when the laboratory or manufacturer recommends it.

What matters for my household?
Is bottled water safer than tap water?
Not necessarily. Bottled water is regulated by the FDA under looser standards than EPA tap water regulations. Many bottled brands are simply municipal tap water put through basic carbon filtration. And bottles leach microplastics into the water itself.

What contaminants are dangerous for children?
Lead is the top concern - the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends zero measurable lead for children under 6. Nitrate causes methemoglobinemia ("blue baby syndrome") in infants under 6 months. Copper at elevated levels causes GI issues in kids. Arsenic and PFAS have long-term developmental concerns.

Does my tap water have chlorine and is it safe?
Yes, most US municipal tap water is treated with chlorine or chloramine (2-4 ppm typical). These disinfectants are what keep bacteria out of the distribution system - remove them completely and you risk contamination.
What most people react to is not the chlorine itself but the disinfection byproducts (THMs, HAAs) that form when chlorine reacts with organic matter. An RO carbon pre-filter (every system on /products/) removes both.
Do I need a shower filter?
A shower filter may help only when its media, flow rate and verified reduction claims match the measured or documented water concern. Check the exact product documentation and replace cartridges on schedule.

Is fluoride in tap water dangerous?
Municipal fluoridation is 0.7 ppm - the CDC and WHO both consider this level safe for cavity prevention. Debate exists on whether the exposure is unnecessary for adults who already use fluoride toothpaste.

What is chromium-6 and does it show in SDWIS?
Chromium-6 (hexavalent chromium) is the industrial contaminant featured in Erin Brockovich - it is a probable human carcinogen.
The EPA regulates total chromium at 100 ppb but does NOT have a specific MCL for chromium-6 alone, so it can show up in your tap water without triggering an SDWIS violation. It shows up in the SimpleLab Ultimate panel ; an RO system may address it only when the exact model has a verified reduction claim - see /products/.
Why does my utility show 0 violations but water tastes bad?
Taste, odor, and appearance issues are usually chlorine/chloramine (added disinfectant), disinfection byproducts (THMs, HAAs from chlorine reacting with organic matter), sulfur ("rotten egg" smell from ground water), or iron/manganese.
Utilities are not required to report on aesthetics - only health-based MCLs. RO with carbon pre-filter fixes all four issues. Start at /products/ for our recommended systems.
What if I am on a private well?
EPA does not monitor private wells. You are the utility. Annual testing is the baseline standard: coliform bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, lead. Add pesticides and VOCs if you are near agricultural land or a former industrial site.
Private-well treatment should start with a laboratory test. Iron, hardness, sediment, bacteria and other findings may require pretreatment before RO; do not choose a system from GPD alone.
How do I verify NSF certification claims?
Look up the model in the public NSF Listings database or the WQA product database. Search by manufacturer + model.
Note which specific NSF/ANSI standard the model is certified to (42 = aesthetics, 53 = health contaminants, 58 = RO reduction, 372 = lead-free materials). A brand that says "tested to NSF standards" without a cert number is not certified.

Can I trust "certified" claims on Amazon product listings?
Not on face value. Many listings claim certification without a specific cert number, or list a cert that only applies to one component (a valve, a housing plastic) and not to the system's contaminant reduction.
The fix takes 30 seconds: copy the exact model number, open the public NSF or WQA database, and search. If nothing comes up under the exact model, the certification claim is worth zero.

What is the difference between a water filter and reverse osmosis?
A pitcher or under-sink carbon filter (Brita, PUR, etc.) removes chlorine, bad taste, and larger particles. It does NOT reliably reduce lead, arsenic, PFAS, chromium-6, nitrate, or dissolved heavy metals.
Reverse osmosis pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane and reduces essentially all dissolved contaminants. If you have specific concerns (lead pipes, agricultural nitrate, PFAS in your ZIP), you need RO.
Certification varies by model and claim. Verify each exact model in the NSF or WQA database.
